Der Künstler Christian Mieves beendete soeben sein halbjähriges Künstler-Stipendium der Stiftung Bartels Fondation in Basel.

Seit vielen Jahren mit Fragen der Sichtbarkeit von Kunst insgesamt sowie der Entstehung und Entwicklung eines Kunstwerkes im Einzelnen beschäftigt, hinterfragte er in dieser Zeit die sich wandelnde Sprache der Malerei durch die Linse von Abwesenheit, Distanz und Lesbarkeit der Wahrnehmung. Anhand der Figur des Heiligen Antonius, der außerhalb der Gesellschaft und in Einsamkeit lebte, mit Visionen und Versuchungen rang, erkundete er alternative Formen des Verstehens und schuf oft großformatige Werke, die in ihrer farbigen Dichte und Kontrasthaftigkeit einladen zu hinterfragen, was und wie gesehen wird und was absichtlich unlesbar bleibt.

Der in Deutschland geborene Künstler hatte zahlreiche Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Deutschland, Großbritannien, Spanien und Mexico. Er lebt und malt seit über 20 Jahren in Newcastle upon Tyne, Großbritannien, wo er außerdem an der University of Newcastle doziert.

The artist Christian Mieves has just completed his six-month artist residency at the Bartels Foundation in Basel.

For many years, he has been preoccupied with questions of the visibility of art in general, as well as the creation and development of individual artworks. During this time, he examined the evolving language of painting through the lens of absence, distance, and the legibility of perception. Using the figure of Saint Anthony, who lived outside of society and in solitude, grappling with visions and temptations, he explored alternative forms of understanding and often created large-format works whose rich color and contrast invite viewers to question what and how it is seen, and what is intentionally left illegible.

The German-born artist has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany, Great Britain, Spain, and Mexico. He has lived and painted in Newcastle upon Tyne, Great Britain, for over 20 years, where he also teaches at Newcastle University.
